Subscribe to feeds with Google Reader

Rowan Simpson just linked to this article which removes the extra step when adding feeds to Google Reader from within Firefox. Usually you’re presented with a choice to subscribe to the feed with either Google Homepage or Google Reader. If you only ever use Google Reader, this step is unnecessary and can be removed by following these instructions:

Type about:config in the address bar, and change the following two entries as follows:

browser.contentHandlers.types.2.title = Google Reader
browser.contentHandlers.types.2.uri = http://www.google.com/reader/view/feed/%s

    It works. Just don’t forget to restart Firefox after editing the configuration.

    Txs!

    Thank you. Works, sort of, I get the “you are not subscribed to this feed yet button” as an extra step (didn’t use to be) but that´s good enough. Thanks also to Sergio for the additional step!

    It worked for me only after setting also:
    browser.feeds.handlers.webservice = http://www.google.com/reader/view/feed/%s

  6. Hi Diana – this definitely works so perhaps my instructions aren’t as clear as they should be. Try clicking through to the original article, the instructions are a little more detailed.

    Glad it worked for you Bernie.

    Cheers – Stuart.

  7. Thanks for passing this information along. I made the changes, restarted Firefox, and now it’s working like a charm.
